Paul D. Hart is an award-winning writer and director whose work often explores fractured families, mental health, identity, and the humor that exists alongside difficult moments. He approaches the page as a filmmaker, building scenes around behavior, movement, framing, light, and rhythm as much as dialogue.
Three Fingers, which Hart wrote and directed, follows a Marine veteran struggling to reconnect with her family after returning home with PTSD. The film unfolds through behavior, sound, image, and gradual revelation, placing the audience inside Jessie's fractured state before fully revealing its source. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Nashville Film Festival, the Kathryn Tucker Windham Storytelling Award at Sidewalk, the Special Jury Award for Southern Spirit at Oxford, and the Audience Award at Katra Film Series NYC. It was also nominated for Best Narrative Short at the Austin Film Festival and screened at Raindance.
That visual approach is backed by more than twenty years of professional film and television production experience. Hart has served as 2nd Unit Gaffer on Captain America: Brave New World, HBO's The Staircase, Sony's Harold and the Purple Crayon, and BMF, and as Gaffer on Son of the South, produced by Spike Lee. Across those roles, he has led lighting crews and worked closely with directors, cinematographers,
and other departments on productions operating at a high professional level. That experience has given him an intimate understanding of how camera movement, lens choice, lighting, blocking, coverage, and editorial decisions come together on set.That experience directly informs how Hart writes and directs. He understands how to communicate visual intention on the page without prescribing the work of the departments that will execute it, and how to carry that intention through the creative and practical decisions of production.
Hart is currently developing Mosh, an original one-hour drama set in the mid-1990s Southern music scene. An ensemble story about friendship, family, music, and the uneasy transition into adulthood, Mosh was named a Finalist in the 2026 Scriptation Showcase Script Competition. The series is Hart's current focus as he moves into long-form television, with the goal of creating, writing, and directing original work at a larger scale.
